From 2000-2005 it seemed like every netlabel that was popping up was putting out at least one, really killer, free album every few months. Has anyone else noticed that the days of the great netlabel seem to be over?

There are still a few shining lights out there, but it seems like when Fukkgod Let’s Create went away (in their familiar form at least), a lot of other netlabels disappeared as well, or started putting out sub-par material. Autoplate is no longer putting out new stuff, and the rest of Thinner has gone the route of paid downloads. Monotonik is still going strong, but I haven’t heard anything vibrant out of that camp in at least two years, not since Bliss’ “Hello Brain Goodbye Heart”. No Type offers fewer and fewer releases overall every year, and sub-labels Sine Fiction (a netlabel project that could be amazing) and Nishi haven’t had any new releases since 2007.

So what’s going on out there? Am I just not finding the good shit on Google anymore or have things really become that stale?

I’ll write more about this soon. I just wanted to get this initial part down here first.

Okay, so the point of that little rant?
I am going to delve deep into the netlabel land again and find some of the good stuff.

Merzbau-Label some nice low-fi, indie type stuff. Also helped me find Tiago Sousa’s “The Western Lands”, which excellent.

Animal Psi is a great site where labels and artists can send in what they are currently releasing and it gets a little blurb on the site. This site would be perfect to me if it also had a forum of some kind, like Recycle Your Ears did back in the day.

Free Albums Galore is a blog dedicated to posting free music downloads from netlabels and artists. This site is particularly great because of the variety they post.

Must Finish is Rjyan Kidwell’s (Cex) label for putting out small run tapes. I’ve been getting these are they have been coming out, so far they’ve all been pretty great.

Autoplate is one of my favorite labels. It was there that I first found Gultskra Artikler. It looks like they aren’t putting out new music anymore, but the back catalog is still up.

Seriously, I don’t get it.

I think this (The Hawk is Howling) is one of the best things they’ve done. I dig it way more than Young Team. This feels more cohesive than Young Team, much more grown up sounding. Young Team was cool because along with it’s epicness, there are points in it that you can totally tell it was made by a bunch of guys with a pretty good sense of humor… at least to me.

Young Team may have been a little more raw, but Hawk is Howling sounds a lot more inspired to me. Why would Mogwai want to take a step backward at this point? They’re moving forward, and every time they do it makes more and more of an impact.

Sooooo, yeah. There’s my two cents.

So my tape deck came in the mail today!!! I can finally listen to some of the tapes I’ve picked up over the last couple of years.

I haven’t owned/listened to anything on casette in a few years, but it sounds much better than I remember. The first thing I popped in was Tsuskimono’s Bat Heads Roll which I picked up around the time it was released. It has been sitting on my shelf for a while.

First off I want to say how good the sound is even when its really loud. So warm. So So So warm. I have the tape deck cranked right now as I’m listening to it and it is amazing.

Those familiar with Tsukimono might find this release a bit of a departure from some of his more mellow releases (his Fukkgod output speccifically), Bat Heads Rolls is much more noise oriented than I had expected. It still sounds like Tsukimono, but it wants to drill a hole in your brain. The sounds aren’t total chaos and their are some great beats after about 30 min. on side A. Side B is a huge synthy drone, like the sound a hive-mind would make or something.

Anyway, great job and now that I’ve got a tape deck again I can listen to it whenever I want!

I haven’t been talking about music lately to anyone. There has actually been a lot of good stuff in the past few months. It was basically laziness that kept me from talking about this album.

Exotical Privates is the best remix album I’ve heard since Coil’s The Snow EP and Nine Inch Nails’ Further Down the Spiral, and ranks high among my favorite Kidwell releases. This is the album that often gets me to work in the morning, gets me through the day, and puts me to bed from time to time.

The whole thing is just so fucking smooth. Rjyan has cracked the code when it comes to reinterpretation. A great range of sample sources to build up a really nice vibe. This is not some crappy Remix Album with slight variations on the same track, these songs are pushing the original versions into new uncharted territories.

Check it out!!! In 50 years when dudes my age are meeting their grand children you’ll want to remember to tell them about Cex!
Also Rjyan if you ever happen to read this, thanks for letting us (Noiseusse) publish one of your journal entries a few years ago.

This is actually a pretty accurate representation of an Adult show. One of those bands that sounds just huge live, no matter how small the room actually is. This video also comes pretty close to capturing how ominous they can be.

From the old site. The waybackmachine is awesome!

First I need to mention that Vaultworks has got it together. The CD arrived in less than a week! Quick mail orders rule!

Juggernaut is the latest release from Brian Williams under the Lustmord moniker. I’ve been following his music for quite a while now; Zeotrope is one of my favorite albums of all time. I tend to get a little down on ambient type music from time to time, but I think Lustmord will always be one of the champions of the sound. Juggernaut is no exception and far more than just boring drones. The disc features King Buzzo of the Melvins on vocals and guitar adding slow distorted chugs and vocal shrieks and mutters and some sort of weird singing.

There are probably some people who aren’t going to be into this as much as previous Lustmord releases. It isn’t a huge departure or anything, but to give an idea, there is at least one guitar solo. I usually think sci-fi with Lustmord, but Juggernaut feels almost rock oriented. It has the Lustmord feeling of sheer terror overall, but there is something different going on with the song structure. Everything is very solid sounding.
At the moment the two middle tracks, (2) Prime and (3) Able are my favorites overall, but there are nice moments in all four of the songs.

Well worth the 10 ten bucks.

So these dudes were a band in Boulder, CO. Being from the area, I got to see them a few times before they finally split.
This track is the last song off of the last EP they did as Shogun, which was called “What Sin Has Twisted”. The rest of the EP is just as awesome, and can still be purchased online (Hell, it looks like even BN.com has it).

I miss these dudes as Shogun. A couple of the members went on to form a band called Dartanian, and they are pretty darn good, but the world has moved on in a way.

Shogun – The Pull

Perhaps my favorite thing about this track is it comes on right before Sigur Ros, and it makes me smile every time. In a sort of evil way.
