The blog of unnecessary quotes is one of my favorite sites when I get bored at work. Since it looks like they are totally backed up on posts, I’ll just post this pic I took here. We found this at our favorite Sushi restraunt over by our apartment.

The placement of the 20% off sticker turn this into The Smash Diet. For years now, myself and a few friends have used “Smashing” as a euphemism for taking a dump.

New John Watkiss Book!

A friend of mine helps represent John Watkiss and has just finished putting together his newest collection, Life Drawing Life Drawing. These are life drawings of life drawing classes, captured through John’s unique eye. I’ve seen the originals of this work and they are absolutely gorgeous, beautifully rendered, with a strange attention to detail. Likewise, the layout and presentation of the book is top notch!

They are trying out a print on demand model for this edition, though I would imagine a limited edition is in the works at some point.

Slowly but surely.

30 discs are burned, CD print tests are done. Final package designs are in the works. (Final CD art is the one on the bottom)

Tomorrow I print the art on the rest of the discs and finish the package design.

Dark Tower Art Project

I’ve started making some Dark Tower related Photoshop art. Right now I’m working on a few pieces for it, and I have 25-30 more that I’d like to do. Its another one of those long term project. I gotta find models to take pics of and find some nice looking fake 6-shooters.

Tony sent over a couple more polished images for the San Diego book. They are both rather sweet, one has a sort of Tarzan kind of feeling, and the other kind of reminds me of something from the Dark Tower, if Roland had been a caveman. San Diego is rapidly approaching. I’m hopefully going to make the little handout books this weekend. Woot!

There is still a lot of fine tuning and writing that need to be done before Comic Con. It looks like now if we do show anything to anyone at Con it will be just concept and some writing. My feeling is that we should self publish it or put it online for free.

Barron Storey: The Journals

A good friend of mine has been given permission from Barron Storey to put his 30 years of journaling online. The journals are absolutely amazing. Honest and beautiful.

I have had the weird twist in my life to get to know Barron fairly well since moving to California and have been able to view the work first hand. These are artifacts of humanity and Barron is the most ‘human’ person I think I’ve ever met, if that makes sense. Anyway, enjoy!

In the coming months I’ll be part of a small team that will be filming a documentary about Barron. As things get further along, there will be clips posted here as well as on the journaling blog.

So far we have done one day of filming Barron as he took down the work from his last show “Victims“. More to follow.

The Books of Monsters

So for the last few years I have been collecting monsters from some of my favorite comic artists. I get the vast majority at comic conventions. Some times they are free, some times I pay money for them and some times I wish that the artist would let me give them money. Most of the time the artists are far easier to talk to than I ever would have thought. A few of these people I would now consider to be my friends. Its amazing some times how friendly these people are considering what total choads we comic book fans can be.

I try not to be pushy with people, and have developed a weird patience in collecting these drawings. With most other things that I collect, I usually can’t stand to let one little thing wait. I’m especially bad about this when it comes to music. Anyway, there was a point to this story, but I’m not sure what it is now.

So this was totally sweet before I got the bright idea to try shading it by hand. I’m just not there yet. I did a whole bunch of different creepy male faces in this pad I made out of a bunch of scrap sheets of brown paper that we had lying around the office. I’ll take some pics of the pad when I get a chance, its pretty sweet. I’ll probably upload the rest of the faces at some point as well.

So I’ve started a sketch book for the first time in over 10 years… which makes me sound older than I am probably.

I recently read (listened to on audiobook) The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, and have been sketching out some DT characters and locations. We’ll see where it goes…

The following are two versions of Topeka.

Anyway I know I can’t draw all that well, but I’m enjoying doing it for the first time in a long time. In the last year I’ve had the pleasure of bumping into Barron Storey a couple of times, and some of the things he’s said made a big impression on me, and kind of got me thinking that maybe I should start drawing again. Sooo, here we go. Whee!

I was digging around in my file cabnet looking for my college transcripts and stumbled upon a few things that I donâ€™t really remember from high school. Some things were just old notes and crap like that, a few old love letters that I tossed, a couple of old short stories written by friends of mine in from when I lived in the mountains (really bad writing, BTW). Then I found thisâ€¦

I donâ€™t remember getting this letter, but I remember why I got it. Normally Iâ€™d leave things like this unedited, but the last I heard was that the person who sent it works for the FBI now. If anyone really cared to, they could figure out who wrote it and what they refer to in the letter.

Iâ€™m not exactly sure why I am sharing thisâ€¦ I think because it freaked me out a little when I found it. A strange snapshot to be sure. This had very little impact on my life at the time (I was only 16), but in retrospect it was a pretty big dealâ€¦

I think Iâ€™m going to have to do another round of cleaning my file cabnet. Its too depressing finding this crap every now and then.
